For all interested gardeners and cooks, I’ve posted a review on the AeroGarden, a kitchen appliance for growing herb and vegetables indoors. The review is located on my other blog, Andrea’s Reviews. I would love to hear other opinions of the AeroGarden, so feel free to share in the comments of the post. Thanks!

Just FYI, the link to your review is broken.
Thanks for catching that broken link, Alanna. Fixed now.
I received an Aerogarden with the herb kit as a Christmas gift. I started the garden on Jan 1, 2009. After about 3 weeks all but, 2 of the pods had sprouted plants. It was obvious there was something wrong with those 2 so, I tried to contact customer service. There is a recording on their line that states they are very busy but will answer all calls within 20 min or something like that. I wait an hour on hold before giving up. I sent them a e-mail which gets an auto-response saying they are busy but will reply within 5 business days or something like that. After 2 weeks I sent another e-mail asking what was going on and were they still in business. After another week I got a reply saying they would replace the 2 pods that did not sprout and that I should expect them in 2 weeks. That was 5 weeks ago and still nothing in the mail.
Pros: I got this as a gift so it reduces the frustration level of having to deal with a company that has a poor product and no customer service. The 3 pods that did sprout have some nice Basil, Mint, and Oregano plants growing in them.
Cons: Their customer service blows or is noexistent. Their seed appears to have a 40% germination rate. The garden is noisy.
Bottom line: After these plants finish their life cycle, Aerogarden is going to the curb.
Aerogrow got really busy during the last holiday season. Yes, they should have had more representatives, but they didn’t, so many people found it quite difficult to get in touch with customer service. However, normally it is easy to get through and customer service is very helpful. They did post a notice on their website about customer service and email being behind during the holiday period.
Also, if your garden was noisy, customer service would probably have replaced the base for you. As for seeds, most any gardener knows that you just don’t always get 100% germination or 100% success when gardening. Customer service WILL replace pods that don’t sprout. You should consider giving your Aerogarden another chance. Or at least, if you don’t want it, consider donating it to a local thrift shop like the Salvation Army. Or sell it on Craigslist or eBay. Don’t create more landfill if you don’t have to!
A very useful forum for learning more about Aerogardens and how to grow your own seeds and find less expensive supplies is at: http://www.aerogardengrowers.com. I’ve found it very helpful and am now growing things like chard, green beans and baby pak choi in my gardens, along with herbs.
