Thanks for all the market tips - I am in DC so both the MD and VA locations might work for me. Haven't been to Eastern Market since it burned and have been wanting to get down there. Wish I had ideas for you but really I just love Polyface meat, which is a pickup type thing and not a market. They'd definitely be in your area, tho....

Chuck and T.W., great tips!

De, I do love good buffalo meat. I used to frequent a restaurant in Chicago called Heartland Cafe, and they serve buffalo. Good stuff!

I love the bread and baked goods from Quail Creek. During the summer they have a stand at the Burke market on Sat's. Another favorite vendor of mine for meats is Cibola Farms. The closest market they sell at for you would be Reston, but only during the summer. They have fresh buffalo meat, which is not only delicious but much healthier than beef.

If you happen to be in Ottawa, the farmers market there is wonderful with locally grown food from the region. There are many Greenmarkets in New York, but there is also talk of starting a permanent market for regional produce called New Amsterdam Public. They had a try-out "winter market" a couple of months back and are continuing to look for support.

When you visit San Francisco, the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (http://tinyurl.com/ppxnt) is in a beautiful location with great produce, meats and prepared food. Another popular one in SF is the Alemany Farmers' Market (http://tinyurl.com/4cvcs9). It's great for Asian produce. My favorite one is actually the Serramonte Farmer's Market in Daly City (http://tinyurl.com/4nv9m7). It's much smaller and less touristy.

And if you are going to the Big Island, the Hilo market (http://tinyurl.com/5eyztt) has amazing tropical fruit. And there is a guy who chops up coconuts, so you can drink the juice straight out of it with a straw.

Have fun checking out the market scene across the US.
