Menu For Hope is a great charity raffle started by Pim of Chez Pim. The annual event has supported Pakistani earthquake victims, tsunami victims, and Word Food Programs. The raffle has grown each year, and last year the raffle raised $91,188.00 for the WFP’s work in Lesotho, Africa. The program is a model food program that encourages local farming and uses the locally grown foods to feed lunch to local school children. Menu For Hope V will continue to support the Lesotho program.
The raffle is managed by First Giving and all money passes through their hands. Tickets cost $10 each and each gives you one chance on the item of your choice. If last year is any indication you will have a wonderful list of prizes to choose from. Pim has the master list of prizes running on her site and updated daily. The Washington Post operates several county newspapers in the DC Metro area, and a reporter from the Washington Post Loudoun Extra [I stand corrected. The Extras are considered sections since they come with the Sunday paper. Obviously I'm not in the newspaper business.] contacted me a couple weeks ago about doing a feature on me and my cooking blog. I was thrilled and a little nervous! The article posted today and I want to share it with my readers. They missed on the Southern connection by leaving out my birthplace and the fact that I spent a few years in Southwestern Virginia before moving to the Midwest, but oh well! [Update: The Post has corrected this error.] And yes, I was shaping dough and babbling away about my favorite Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day while the reporter shot the top photo, which is why I have that dorky look on my face.

Today I’m at BlogHer DC speaking with Liz Henry, Veronica Noone, and Kristen King at the 1 PM panel on Blogging Basics: 6 Steps to Personalize, Polish, and Promote Your Blog. Here’s the agenda description:
Join BlogHer’s Liz Henry and a team of subject-matter experts for a quick and effective blog makeover. Let’s look at your blog, whether you’ve got one post up or 100, and give it some love. Liz will explain 6 simple steps you can take to give your blog a tune-up, and then we’ll break into small groups to try out some of what you’ve learned. These 6 steps can help clarify to your readers who you are and what you write. Whether you use WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, or any other platform – you and your platform are welcome.
Personalize: Veronica “Roni” Noone will make sure your readers know how to identify and reach you…and that you feature your community, so they can also see themselves. In addition she’ll work with you to learn how to add images, or even audio and video, to show who you are. Polish: Andrea Meyers (well known for Andrea’s Recipes) will cover the basic geeky ingredients that add up to a truly functional, findable, fabulous blog. Learn about appropriate, search-friendly hyperlinking, tagging…why and how, and even about headlines and why they matter. Promote: Kristen King will help you learn how (and why) to put your post on BlogHer, Twitter, Kirtsy, Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit, Stumbleupon, other social sites.

I’ve Adopted…

No, not another child, I’m very happy with the size of my family, thank you!
I’ve adopted a blogger. Kristen of Dine and Dish sponsors Adopt-a-Blogger, a program that pairs experienced bloggers with newer bloggers. This is my first time as a mentor blogger, and I’m excited to introduce my adopted blogger, Jennifer Adams of Palate to Pen. Jennifer is a food and wine writer in Cambridge, MA and is currently study for her WSET® advanced certificate, and she’s toying with the idea of becoming a sommelier. WSET® stands for Wine & Spirit Education Trust® (yes, I had to look that up), and they offer classes in wine all over the world. Considering her experience in food and wine writing—she’s been working in the field for about seven years—I feel a strong sense of irony that I’m mentoring her. Seems like it should be the other way around! She’s a fabulous writer.

I thought the best way to introduce Jennifer would be with an interview, so I subjected her to a list of questions, which she graciously answered. (And of course she turned right around and sent me a list of questions, too!) So without further ado, meet Jennifer! Read more

It seems surreal that Grow Your Own has been going and growing for a whole year. I’ve had a lot of fun reading all the posts over the last year and visiting blogs that were new to me, and I hope that all of you who have participated have enjoyed the experience. It feels like a community has come together around this event, and the event has grown because of you and your interest in growing your own food and sharing with others. The best part of this event has been making new friends.
If you are new to Grow Your Own, please visit the Grow Your Own page to learn more about the event and how to submit an entry. This is the official one year anniversary event and posts are due on August 30. I will host this round, so please send your entries to andreasrecipesgyo AT gmail DOT com.
